Provenance research: The lid tankard was acquired in 1969 from the art dealer F.K.A. Huelsmann in Hamburg. The previous provenance of the object remains unknown. F.K.A. Huelsmann was founded in 1938, at a time when many Jewish art dealers were forced to close their businesses. In at least one case, objects belonging to victims of Nazi persecution came into the possession of F.K.A. Huelsmann, as demonstrated by the restitution of porcelain figurines to the heirs of Heinrich Rothenberger from the Huelsmann Museum in Bielefeld in 2017. Due to the large number of provenance gaps, especially between 1933 and 1945, Nazi persecution-related confiscation cannot be ruled out.
