Description

A whole female figure seated on the ground, her gaze turned to the right, dressed in a richly pleated antique garment; her face turned to the right under a veil revealing her facial features, her right arm hanging down, her left arm resting on her lap, gathering the garment. The figure rests on an unhewn pedestal and a contemporary marble base. It seems to be clearly worked on a frontal view, the left arm is only rather roughly, clumsily executed.

Antonio Corradini owed much of his fame to allegorical figures of veiled women.

The "Fede velata" was undoubtedly one of the main works in the famous collection of Field Marshal Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg, which was built up in Venice. Apart from a few folds, the work corresponds to an almost identical figure by Corradini, which was placed around 1721 as one of the assistant figures of the altar of Emma (Hemma) of Gurk in the cathedral of Gurk in Carinthia.

Provenance
Since at least 1736 in the collection of General Field Marshal in Venetian service Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg (* 1661, † 1747) and with some probability commissioned by him from the artist; in February 1739 moved to the family palace in Berlin's Wilhelmstraße occupied by his nephew Adolf Friedrich von der Schulenburg (* 1685, † 1741); after his death in the Battle of Mollwitz, into the possession of his brother Christian Günther (* 1684, † 1765); Fideikommiss Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg; by succession into the Wolfsburg branch of the von der Schulenburg family. Before 1942 Wolfsburg Palace (until 1932 Gardelegen County, Province of Saxony; then Gifhorn County, Province of Hanover; today City of Wolfsburg); then moved to the newly built Neumühle Palace near Tangeln, municipality of Beetzendorf in the Altmark County of Salzwedel; probably left there in 1945 when the von der Schulenburg family fled (last documented in Wolfsburg Palace by photo around 1930/35); whereabouts unknown
