Tapestry, month of May, zodiac sign Gemini from the series "Les mois Lucas"
The subject of May's illustration is archery. Under a tall leafy tree, a bearded man is riding a probably white horse, accompanied by a lady on a dark horse. Both are holding a branch in their hands. Behind them follows a young couple also on horseback, another is sitting on the ground opposite the riders. On the far left is a stone fountain. White water gushes out of a fantastically carved head and falls into a water basin. A jester sits on the edge of a stone plinth, the motif behind him covered by the border of the piece mounted to the left of the May tapestry. He leans his left hand on a tambourine and turns towards a seated woman in front of him; in the background is a tall maypole with a hanging wreath and foliage halfway up and a bird on top. At the foot of the trunk, two men are busy shooting arrows at the bird. Around them is a crowd of men carrying bows. In the distance on the left is a low wall on which many people are sitting. Behind it is a row of buildings, trees and bushes, and in the centre more people can be seen, some dancing, with a castle and low hills in the background. On the right is a forest from which people and a dog emerge, some carrying bows or branches.
The cartouche in the lower border contains the zodiac sign Gemini.
According to the inventory of the Hofbettmeisterey 1769: 4.295 x 6.796 m (7 cubits 14 inches x 12 cubits). Visible mounting width on the conserved photograph approx. 4.90 m, the picture field on the right and left each overlaps by approx. 80 cm from the adjoining monthly tapestries on the left November, on the right August.
The height of 7 el. 14 inches, i.e. 4.295 m, generally given for the series in the written sources can be regarded as ideal. It can be assumed that there were differences of at least ± 10 cm.
