Description

A scene of people shearing sheep is depicted. In the foreground on the left, a group of women and a man are carrying out the necessary tasks. They all turn to the right towards an approaching couple bringing food. In the background, the landscape opens up with fields, hills and architecture, with the rural folk busy shearing sheep everywhere in between. The cartouche in the lower border contains the zodiac sign of Cancer.

According to inventory of the Hofbettmeisterey 1769: 4.295 x 3.965 m (7 cubits 14 inches x 7 cubits).

The height measurement generally given for the series as 7 cubits 14 inches, i.e. 4.295 m in the written sources, is to be regarded as ideal. It can be assumed that there were differences of at least ± 10 cm.

Provenance
Until 1942 in the Dresden Castle, Imperial Salon (Tapestry Hall), 2nd floor of the Bear Garden Wing; on August 16/17, 1943, the 8 tapestry rolls were transported to Schleinitz Palace, as an inspection on June 8, 1943, led to the conclusion that the rooms in the Green Vault were not sufficiently protected against bombing; A loss in connection with the events of WWII cannot be ruled out (according to the files, loss at the relocation site).
