Description
Copy after this attributed original. A portrait of a horse; the Oldenburg named Kranich, the favourite horse of Count Anton Günther von Oldenburg (* 1583, † 1667), is seen striding to the left, frontally from the side against a dark background, the long mane of the grey horse dragging on the ground, an arm clad in a red sleeve reaching into the picture space from the right holds the metre-long tail of the animal. The horse's hind leg is adorned with a large "A" in a wreath of leaves.
The original of the painting, attributed to Peter de Saint-Simon, is in Royal Danish possession at Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen (see Rosenborg Castle. A Guide to the Danish Royal Collections (Official Guide) Copenhagen 1999, p. 32, no. 728).
Provenance
Old family property, before 1942 Wolfsburg Castle (until 1932 Gardelegen County, Province of Saxony; then Gifhorn County, Province of Hanover; today City of Wolfsburg); then moved to the newly built Neumühle Castle near Tangeln, municipality of Beetzendorf in the Altmark County of Salzwedel; left behind in 1945 during the flight from Neumühle Castle before it was taken over by the Red Army; Neumühle Castle was assigned to the Soviet occupation zone and expropriated; whereabouts unknown
