Panel painting: Depiction: St. Jerome as penitent in the desert kneels half-naked before a crucifix, holding a stone in his hand to strike his chest; a skull (and other vanitas symbols), sometimes a scorpion and a snake, are beside him & St. Sebastian is pierced by arrows; the archers are visible & Rochus (Roch) of Montpellier, confessor and pilgrim; possible attributes: Angel (with ointment vessel or spoon), dog (sometimes with loaf of bread), (finger pointing to) plague bump on thigh, pilgrim's shell, staff, hat, & bag; desert; penance; kneeling; crucifix; stone; beating; skull; scorpion; snake; Vanity; Vanitas; Self-chastisement; Breast & Archer & Rochus (Saint); Physician; Confessor; Pilgrim; Angel; Ointment; Tin; Spoon; Dog; Loaf; Plague; Thigh; Pilgrim's staff; Pilgrim's bag; Shell (of the pilgrim); Bump; Pilgrim's hat.
