Description
Portrait of claimant's grandfather, then the General Director of Assicurazioni Generali in Trieste.
Provenance
Prior to fleeing Vienna for the US in 1938, claimants' grandparents packed all of their belongings including their paintings in a lift, which they deposited in the warehouse of Schenker & Co., Vienna. Crates that were believed to have contained this painting among others were seized by the Gestapo on November 16, 1940 and transported to the Dorotheum, where they may have been sold some time after October 22, 1941. Alternatively, the painting may have been included in a sale at the "Vienna Rotunda" to which only high-ranking Nazi Party members had access.
