Description
The portrait is a posthumous portrait of Eduard Rosenthal (1853-1926) for the collection of rectors' portraits of the University of Jena. Rosenthal was professor of legal history and twice rector of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena.
Provenance
The picture was commissioned by the rectorate in 1929. In 1935 it was given from the collection to the University Library of Jena for custody (UAJ, existed BA, No. 1593, p. 7r). In 1944 the artist demanded the frame of the painting back (UAJ, existed BA, No. 1593, p. 8r), but according to the Rectorate the painting should be kept (UAJ, existed BA, No. 1593, p. 8v). Since then it has not been found in a verified state. In 1948 a "Rosenthal portrait" was found in the ruins of the library. It may also be a charcoal drawing by Georg Sauter, 1923, which is kept in the custody of the Custody today.
