Description
According to the written expertise of F. H. Zinckgraf, expert of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts, Munich, which is submitted with this work. Expertise by Zinckgraf. The photograph reproduced below, painted on canvas, measuring 31.7 x 25.3 cm, is, in my opinion, a perfectly authentic work by Carl Spitzweg from the 1940s. It is possible that it is identical to the work listed in the autograph, "Sleeping Monk" (with book). Spitzweg's subtle humor is evident in the book's title, which reads (in red): "Spiritual Sleep-Drawn." Munich, May 20, 1941. Signed by F. H. Zinckgraf, expert of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts, Munich, Upper Bavaria (Dorotheum, Vienna, February 24-27, 1942 (Lot 190). Signed, framed
Provenance

In April 1938, Adalbert (Bela) Parlagi and his family emigrated from Vienna to London via Switzerland; December 7, 1938, Parlagi put his art collection into storage with the shipping company Zdenko Dworak at their warehouse located in Vienna XVIII, Gersthoferstrasse 8 & 10; the Gestapo confiscated Parlagi’s property from the warehouse and auctioned it through the Vugesta at the Dorotheum in Vienna; the painting was sold at the Dorotheum sale of February 24-27, 1942 (Lot 190, Illustration 32).

The painting last appeared on December 6, 1997, at the Lempertz auction house in Cologne where it sold (Lot 2117, Illustrated in color). Current whereabouts unknown.
