Description
Bust portrait facing right with wig (?); a gold cross set with four pearls sits on the front of the white shirt; the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece is draped over the black, fur-lined coat; a fly sits on the boards in the background; the flesh tone is brownish, the modelling of the features rather severe but very lively; the rendition of the jewellery is excellent; on the eyes, some retouching is obvious; the frame is rounded at the top and has been made from the panel in one piece.
Provenance
From the collection of duke August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (cf. 1826 inventory). […]. Listed in the 1930s as a nationally valuable cultural monument in the course of the Germany-wide survey (ThHStA Weimar, C 1624, 31.5.1935); no proof of sale can be ascertained in the records of the Gotha Art Collections between 1933 and 1945 (loss card index Neumeister); 1943 in Reinhardsbrunn (catalog 1943, Bl. 3); in 1945 presumably transferred to Coburg (cf. transcript of Eberhard Schenk zu Schweinsberg 1953); since then lost; after 1945 already turned up at an auction; private collection Paris; again consigned for auction at Christie's; returned to Gotha in 2009/2010 as a loan with the help of the "Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung".
