Place of loss: Gut Perlhof in Gießhübel near Mödling (near Vienna), Rudolf von Gutmann's residence. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the collection of 44 Rembrandt etchings was confiscated by the Gestapo; the etchings were subsequently stored at the Institute for the Preservation of Monuments in Vienna; in 1941, 41 of the etchings were transferred to the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden by Hitler's special representative for the Linz Museum, Dr Posse; this was done without Rudolf von Gutmann's knowledge and against his will; in 1949, the three etchings remaining at the Institut für Denkmalpflege (now the Austrian Federal Monuments Office) in Vienna were returned to Rudolf von Gutmann.
