Description
"The terracotta sculpture Mother and Child in its block-like unity, the close nestling of the two bodies, the austere, unpathetic seriousness of this woman with her child bears witness to the artist's strong talent." This sculpture was exhibited with four other sculptures as well as playing cards and masks by Elisabeth Springer as part of the "Reichsausstellung Jüdischer Künstler" ["Reich Exhibition of Jewish Artists"] at the Jewish Museum Berlin in 1936. It is only known through photographs, including the one shown here, which was taken at that exhibition by the Berlin photographer Abraham Pisarek, and through an exhibition view by Herbert Sonnenfeld, which gives an impression of the size of the sculpture.

Elisabeth Springer, married Weiss, ca. 1935/1936; whereabouts unknown - a loss as a result of Nazi persecution is suspected
According to Hans Lamm, Von Juden in München. Ein Gedenkbuch, Munich 1959, p. 235 (illustration "Mother and Child" by E.S. p. 237), the sculpture "Mother and Child" was acquired by the Berlin Jewish Museum. An enquiry there in 2006 revealed that the sculpture is not known there.
