Provenance
Likely deposited by Mme Zak or her son Jean on October 10, 1940, at the Maison Bailly warehouse in Paris / Likely looted by the Dienststelle der Feldpost Nr 43071 W, avenue d’Iéna, Paris, on June 6 and 7, 1944 / Sent to the Jeu de Paume in Paris and registered by Dr Borchers of the E.R.R., Paris, as MA-B 1330 on June 12, 1944 (ERR inventory list) / Indicated as sent to Nikolsburg on August 1, 1944 (ERR inventory list), but the train never left France / Exhibited at the Jeu de Paume in 1945 / Recognized by Mme Fernandez, former secretary and buyer of Galerie Zak (declared that painting was exhibited at Galerie Zak before the war), and claimed by Vladimir Raykis, director of Galerie Zak, on December 18, 1946 (Raykis assumed that the painting was looted from Maison Bailly) / Transferred to the Domaines to be sold in 1950 / Claimed once again by Vladimir Raykis on March 23, 1950 / Since no other claim was made for the painting, the OBIP director asked the Director of the Domaines to transfer the painting back to their office and declared on June 16, 1950, that he saw no objections to its restitution (no restitution agreement discovered and it remains unclear whether the Domaines handed over the painting and whether the painting was restituted) / Acquired by Mordechai Narkiss, director of the Bezalel National Museum in Jerusalem, from an unknown seller between June 1950 and 1954 and shipped to Israel (not on list of artworks donated or sold by Vladimir Raykis to Narkiss) / Currently at the Mishkan Museum of Art in Ein Harod (inv. 295) (the museum has recognized that the painting was looted during WWII and is searching for the heirs)
