Description
Under three architectural arches the painting shows three scenes from the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel". Probably on the left: The witch discovers Hansel and Gretel at her house; center: the children are abandoned in the forest; right: the witch is pushed into the oven.
Cf. two further paintings of the series in the collection of the Städtische Galerie Dresden, which were found in 1950: "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty", as well as preliminary colour drawings for all four paintings of the series in the Kupferstich-Kabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
Provenance
Commissioned work for the Maria Anna Children's Hospital in Dresden-Trachau; in 1931 the hospital was taken over by the city of Dresden; painting (as well as three other works belonging to a series of fairy tale pictures) handed over to the Dresden Art Collection; disappeared from the New Dresden City Hall in 1945; [...]; whereabouts unknown.
