Description
A monk in a black robe stands by a crumbling stone wall, facing left and smelling a flowering rose bush. Right hand resting on the wall, in his left hand a book. In the foreground left shrubs, in the background right high blue mountains. Inscribed lower centre; estate stamp lower right.
Provenance
Acquired in May 1927 for the museum of arts and crafts in Halle (Saale) from an exhibition at the Hugo Helbing Gallery in Berlin. According to archival documents, stolen in May 1945 at the Bösenburg cave (Gerbstedt municipality, Mansfeld-Südharz district, Land Saxony-Anhalt), presumably by an American soldier. [...] Sold in May 1985 at the 606th art auction "Alte Kunst" of the Kunsthaus Lempertz in Cologne. Whereabouts unknown, presumably private property.
