Description
three-quarter-length portrait of the sitter with curly wig and dressed in contemporary fashion of the early 18th century with a broad sash and light-coloured neckcloth, the star of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle on the lapel; the right hand outstretched pointing to the left side of the picture, the right supported on the staff of command; in the lower right corner a heavy metal helmet; in the left background a battle with an explosion and a rider on a rearing horse.
This is one of several copies, at least partially commissioned by the sitter, of the original by Antoine Pesne, which before a restoration in the 20th century, u. r. "PINX ANT PESNE 17...(57?)" on the lower right.

Copied from the portrait made by Antoine Pesne for Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg himself in his collection (today: Collection Graf von der Schulenburg-Wolfsburg); family property; before 1942 Wolfsburg Castle (until 1932 Gardelegen County, Province of Saxony; then Gifhorn County, Province of Hanover; today City of Wolfsburg); then moved to the newly built Neumühle Castle near Tangeln, municipality of Beetzendorf in the Altmark County of Salzwedel. Last documented in a restoration report from the first half of the 20th century consulted by Hammerschmidt in 2001; left behind in 1945 during the flight from Neumühle Castle before it was taken over by the Red Army; Neumühle Castle was assigned to the Soviet occupation zone and expropriated; whereabouts unknown
