Description
The painting shows the crucifixion of Christ on Calvary, surrounded by intense emotions and religious symbolism. On the left, Mary and the disciples mourn, while soldiers with red shields and armour stand on the right. The background of the panel consists of a gold ground, which emphasises the theme of the painting.
Provenance
W. H. Wheelwright Collection, Christie's, London, 26 July 1878, lot 237 (as ‘early Italian); M. David Reder (Jew, living in Brussels and Antwerp, Belgium from 1925 - 1940); confiscated and seized from the Reder family home at 51 Rue Stevin in 1943 by the German military office Brüsseler Treuhandgesellschaft, 47 Cantersteen, following the Reder family's flight from Belgium to England in May 1940 as a result of Nazi persecution; restitution application for the paintings from David Reder's former property filed by the Royal Belgian Government with the Federal Restitution Office on 19 May 1961 - including the painting ‘Ecole italienne 15e - Calvaire’ under the ‘number 1456’; proceedings discontinued on 4 May 1961, as the whereabouts of the paintings still missing and expropriated from David Reder's property could not be clarified; Finarte Milan, 13 December 1989, lot. 64 (Fondation Federico Zeri Bologna); G. Sarti Antiques, London; Collection Dr André Convert (1931 - 2021), Rhine-Alps region, France; sold at Christie's, Paris, 18 May 2022, lot 115 for €50,000.
