Description
In Center of the picture a church, built of red bricks, covered with a roof of slates, that is surrounded by a low wall. On both sides trees and bushes are completing the background like a setting. From the middle a path bends along the church, on that some inhabitans of the village can be seen. A ruinous archway interrupts the wall; at the left side of the picture a tall oak. White cumulus clouds high above in the sky. Signed at left bottom: M. Hobemma ft. 1662. At backside label of the National Exhibition of Works of Art, Leeds 1868. Picture Galleries, Proprietor Dr. Jackson and Siegelabdruck: Gallery Sedelmeyer, Paris. Collection J. Enschede in Haarlem, auction 1786, Nr. 17. Collection J. de Vos, Amsterdam, auction 1833, Nr. 17. Collection Dr. Jackson in Leeds 1868. (But according to Hofstede de Groot there is no Hobbema of collection Dr. Jackson listed at the auction catalogue.) Collection Baron Königswarter from Vienna, auction Berlin 1906, Nr. 39; there called "Kirche von Brederode" (an arbitrary title by Hofstede). Collection Otto Gerstenberg, Berlin. Vgl. Hofstede de Groot, Krit. Verzeichnis, Meindert Hobbema, Nr. 23. Source: Hugo Helbing Kunsthandlung and Kunstversteigerungshaus: Kunstbesitz eines Berliner Sammlers. Katalog Nr. 49; Math.
