Provenance
Among the loans from the ‘Kircheninspektion der evangelischen Hofkirche (Sophienkirche) from 1900 to the Königliches Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden were precious and rare Protestant-Lutheran paraments. These were packed by the Museum of Decorative Arts into boxes T 5 and T 14 and taken to Frauenstein Castle on one of the transports on 3, 8 and 14 July 1943 or on 8 May 1944. An inspection on 21 June 1945 revealed that the camp was ‘heavily ransacked’. On 16 February 1946, the salvaged goods could not be released for transport by the mayor of Frauenstein because they were subject to confiscation by the Russian district commander. 'The collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts had been examined in detail some time ago by a Russian expert and then, on the instructions of this gentleman, some of it had been packed up by Frauenstein residents. On 20 January 1947, the items removed from Frauenstein Castle had not yet been released for return. The whereabouts of the crates are unknown. None of the textiles packed in the crates were returned to the Museum of Decorative Arts.
