Description
Half-length portrait on a silver-gilt pedestal with enamel ornaments in white, red and green on a gold ground; the amethyst has been cut in such a fashion that the so-called unripe part is used as the face and the red part as the back of the head; the pedestal inset with engraved gold plates, showing allegories - front: Catholic Faith with cross and book, trampling down Heresy, the church of St Peter and the inscripiton: "HAERESIS EXTINCTA" in the background; right: Justice with sword and scales above prostrated rebels and the inscription: "SINGVLARIVM CERTAMINVM COERCITVS"; left: Rhine with raised hands, the river in the background, soldiers crossing the river on the left and fleeing soldiers on the right, with the inscription: "RHENO BATAVISQVE VNA SVPERATIS"; back: Victory on a chariot drawn by two winged horses, driving over the earth in the clouds, and the inscription: "VICTORIAE CELERITAS INCREDIBILIS"; below, on the edge: "LVDOVICVS MAGNVS".
Provenance
According to the 1721 inventory, the bust was gifted by the Gotha Estates to duke Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1722.
