Description
Original by Lukas Cranach the Elder or the Cranach School. The panel originally formed the rear of an altar wing with St. Nicholas and St. Roch and belonged to an altar triptych in the Franciscan Church of Torgau.
Provenance
After 1945, the altar wing was separated and the two panels sold separately at auction in Zurich as early as 1979. "St. Nicholas" resurfaced at an auction in Switzerland at the end of 2008 and was acquired as a permanent loan for the collection of the Stadt- und Kulturgeschichtliches Museum thanks to the support of the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung. St. Roch entered the collection of the Swiss Foundation for Art, Culture and History and was identified as belonging to Torgau in the course of provenance research there.
