Description

Portrait of a middle-aged man with short-cropped hair wearing a buttoned doublet with collar and attached cape, three-quarter figure, against a dark background. "With his hand on his hip he is supporting his right arm with part of the cape wrapped around it." (Hammerschmidt 2001).

In the background in the upper left of the picture, the inscription "Achatz von Bartensleben 1592-1636" was darkly painted over or removed during a restoration.

Provenance
Old family property; before 1942 Wolfsburg Castle (until 1932 Gardelegen County, Province of Saxony; then Gifhorn County, Province of Hanover; today Wolfsburg City); then moved to the newly built Neumühle Castle near Tangeln, municipality of Beetzendorf in the Altmark County of Salzwedel, where it is located: "Study of the master of the house, main floor". Last documented by historical photograph in Wolfsburg Castle; left behind in 1945 during the flight from Neumühle Castle before it was taken over by the Red Army; Neumühle Castle was assigned to the Soviet occupation zone and expropriated; whereabouts unknwn.

Zuletzt dokumentiert durch von ihm konsultiertem Restaurierungsbericht aus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und historisches Photo im Stadtarchiv der Stadt Wolfsburg (Institut für Zeitgeschichte und Stadtpräsentation).
