About the institution
On May 3, 1943, the Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians stored its entire archive in a rock cellar beneath Mutzschen Castle in Saxony. The GDNÄ archives were packed into 143 boxes and one package. All boxes are labeled “K S I Leipzig No. ...”, 55 of which also bear an “N”. In 1945, the area around Mutzschen was occupied by the Red Army. It became impossible to transport the stored objects back.
