On 23/24 June 1945, the contents of the Prussian State Library and Lüne Monastery, which had been transferred to Waldenburg Castle, were handed over by the castle owner to an American art protection officer for transport to the western occupation zones. However, the museum collection apparently remained in the castle, which was subsequently occupied by Soviet troops. After the troops withdrew in 1947, either the entire museum collection or at least large parts of it were missing, including items on loan from private owners.
