Violin
March 1941 – Acquisition:
A Guadagnini violin is purchased for 16,155 Reichsmarks, including bow and case, from the Emil Herrmann company in Berlin/New York (mXp 3031009; mXp h3501). The purchaser is the RMVP (mXp 3070299). However, this violin is labelled Johannes Baptista Guadagnini, Piacenza 1748.
A loss due to Nazi persecution or a loss during World War II cannot be ruled out due to gaps in the provenance.
The provenance of the instrument prior to 1941 cannot be reconstructed.
The discrepancy between the violin documented in the RMVP's purchase records (Piacenza 1748) and the violin examined here (Parma 1761) cannot be explained.
A confiscation due to persecution can neither be ruled out nor confirmed.
