Description
Large jardinière (plant pot) with blue decoration on a white background. The jardinières originate from Seto (Aichi Prefecture) in Japan and were created during the Meiji period in the late 19th century. They were export goods for the Western market and became very popular among the European bourgeoisie after the World Expositions, where Japan was well represented with ceramics. From a stylistic point of view, the ceramics probably originate from the Kawamoto or Kato family's manufactory. The decoration features floral motifs and two young birds (possibly pheasant chicks). Peonies, grasses and a pattern of leaves and gourds can be seen on the upper flattened rim, which has an almost graphic appearance.
Provenance
The two planters can be seen for the first time in photos of the conversion of the manor house into a guest house for the town between 1939 and 1941. It is not known whether they were purchased specifically for the guest house or were already in the house. There are no visible markings, embossings or stickers.
