Description
Cartouche of a Torah curtain with soutache and Hebrew inscription, acquired framed. The inscription translates as: A gift from the women's community of the Holy Community of Zwartsluis. In memory of the dedication of the synagogue on Shabbat Parashat Para in the year 612 after the small number [22nd Adar 5612 = 13.03.1852]). On the back of the frame several stickers one below the other: 696-E3 X48; GIVEN BY THE SISTERHOOD; IN 1852
Provenance
Acquisition from the art trade: 28.05.1986 Sotheby's New York, lot 235 as German Torah Ark Textile; the place name given could not be verified, but the place Zwartsluis, Netherlands, was identified on the basis of historical sources. According to newspaper reports in the contemporary press, a synagogue was inaugurated there in 1852.
