Description
The figure of an angel carved from lime wood, originally holding a candlestick, is attributed to an unknown carver who created a late Gothic wooden relief depicting the Holy Family around 1510. This wooden relief was purchased by Mindelheim around 1640. This master is therefore known as the master of the Mindelheim clan. The chandelier angel in question here was probably created in Swabia around 1520.
Provenance
According to the entry made by the former trustee administration for cultural assets in Munich on the property card belonging to the above artwork, the artwork was auctioned off by Kunsthaus Lempertz on 20 and 21.4.1939 in Cologne. The artwork is listed in the catalogue under the serial number 66a and is illustrated on plate 11. It can be seen from the catalogue that the above auction included works of art from the estate of the sculptor, restorer and church decorator Prof. Theodor Schnell (1870-1938) from Ravensburg, which he had acquired during his professional career.
At the Lempertz auction, the candelabra angel was acquired for Hermann Göring's art collection.
