St Catherine's legend: Beheading of St. Catherine

Panel painting: "Beheading of St. Catherine". In the foreground, kneeling, St. Catherine, looking upwards, with crossed (bound) hands. On her head, above long, wavy hair, a golden crown which merges into a halo. Clothing: Red dress with green cuffs and collar trim. A light-coloured cloak has fallen to the ground in folds and surrounds her. Behind her an executioner is unsheathing his sword. At the right edge of the picture, somewhat in the background, three men are standing; the one in front, bearded, nobly dressed, (red velvet coat with brocade collar), is half facing the scene, half turned away; his gaze is directed upwards, across the action, into the distance. At the left edge of the picture a part of the wooden wheel of torture can be seen; half lying under the wheel is an injured, bareheaded man and two other men, one with a fragment of the broken wheel in his hand and crouching by the frame. Hailstones are falling around the wheel. The scene is set in a slightly hilly landscape with trees and a lake, painted in the style of the period, without perspective. A gold-ornamented firmament completes the picture. Black frame with golden mouldings at the fillet.
