Description
Right the lake with a small, overgrown headland. The foothills of the deciduous forest extends to the shore. On the opposite bank a small town. In the center of the image of the riverside path through the woods. On the way a riding peasant woman and a monk, going to the image. At the edge of the forest under a tree half left a goatherd with goats. Clouds in the sky.
Provenance
1875 (approximately) creation of the painting by the artist. 1939 (20.02.) Purchase of the painting by the Chancellery of the gallery Arnold for 12.000.- RM. The purchase was arranged by Prof. Troost. 1945 (27.06.) acquisition of the painting from the former hiding place Altaussee in the CCP Munich. Registry under number Mü. 1307. 1962 (23.08.) Handover of the painting in the departmental assets of AA .Use to equipment purposes in the German Embassy in Cape Town. 2012 (June) acquisition of the painting in the Equipment Storage Berlin, Unit 112.
There are no indications that a NS - suggest persecution-related assets loss. However, because of gaps in the provenance history due to persecution asset loss can not be completely ruled out.
