Description
Romantic Italian landscape with two shepherds in the foreground, biblical staffage in the middle ground (Mary with the infant Jesus riding on a donkey, led by Joseph and three wanderers), villa in the background. Original decorative frame, glossy and oil-gilded with various surface techniques (gauze, scattered sand), ornamental and floral applications. Inscriptions on the reverse of the picture: On the stretcher frame: "Villa Berg" (?), probably an inventory and transport note, round sticker with illegible initials and numbers and the number "347".
Provenance
Origin unknown. Purchased in May 1940 by the NS Art Department of the City of Stuttgart with the working title "Romantic Landscape" and inventoried without naming the previous owner or the purchase price. Circumstances of acquisition unknown.
