The painting shows Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke (1800-1891), called Moltke the Elder, in bust and half profile looking to the right against a brown background. He is dressed in a blue uniform and wears the Pour le Mérite Order on his red collar.

The work is signed and dated "L. Schäfer 1899" in the centre right.
