Portrait of Adriaen de Vries
Inscription: "Verfertigte in Augspurg/über Lebens-Gröss von Metall Ac 1599. den/Mercurius, und 1602 den Herculesbrunnen,/samt den 3 vortrefflichen Nymphen".
Finds on the reverse:
Remains of a red wax seal from Augsburg at bottom right; two labels from the Augsburg art collections and museums.
The painting was owned by Matthias Storf, Augsburg, until 1886.
On 31 July 1939, the Augsburg Municipal Art Collections informed Department 6 about the planned purchase of a painting from the ‘non-Aryan property’ of Heinrich Werner, Ainmillerstr. 34, Munich. According to the Municipal Art Collections, the painting was offered on Werner's behalf by Richard Feist, Zeuggasse 9, Augsburg, and sold for 325 RM.
The in-depth research carried out in 2025 revealed that Werner was Catholic. However, the letter dated 31 July 1939 explicitly mentions a painting from ‘non-Aryan ownership’. Richard Feist, who is said to have acted as an intermediary, was of Jewish origin. It is therefore likely that there was a mix-up in the aforementioned letter and that Feist was the actual owner of the painting.
