Recto on passepartout: upper right in pencil "40-" and "...+ Pass. 5., 1599., Philipp de Marnixe, pupil of Calvin." and "Jac. De Gheyn (1565 Antwerp. 1629 The Hague)", “VI b/52/891”; recto on plate: lower left “Dgheyn” and lower right "fe. 1599"; verso: lower left in pencil “48751”.
Provenance
30.10.1952: acquired from the art antiquarian Reinhold Puppel, Quedlinburg (formerly Hollstein & Puppel, Berlin). It is not known when and from whom Reinhold Puppel acquired the print. It cannot be ruled out that the print belonged to the old stock of the aryanised art shop Hollstein & Puppel. Reinhold Puppel deliberately traded in cultural property that had been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution.
