Description
This Misrach - a picture panel that was symbolically placed on the east wall of synagogues or (religious) Jewish households facing Jerusalem to indicate the direction of prayer. On the back of the heavily damaged object there are traces that could possibly be interpreted as shoe prints. The object is heavily damaged, yellowed, has foxing, water stains as well as serious missing parts at the edges of the sheet.
This lithograph was produced in Wissembourg (Bas-Rhin/Alsace) by the Weissenburger Lithographische Anstalt Gebrüder Wentzel around 1870. Misrachim of this origin were especially common in southern Germany.
Provenance
Presumably previous owner: Emden, Jewish Community, 09.11.1938, presumed removal on the night of the pogrom 09.11.1938, afterwards Emden, Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst und Vaterländische Altertümer ("Society for Fine Arts and Patriotic Antiquities") / Sammlungen des Ostfriesischen Landesmuseums Emden ("Collections of the East Frisian State Museum Emden").
