The portrait was purchased on 8 June 1936 from the forced dissolution of the Münster Masonic Lodge "Zu den drei Balken". It is noted in the inventory book with the indication of origin "Johannes-Loge zu den 3 Balken, Münster (Liquid.)". The present painting is thus clearly one of the objects identified as having been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution.
