Description
Approximately 500 individual manuscripts. Holdings of the Old Council Library in Mühlhausen (15th–19th centuries). The Old Council Library comprised 1,203 titles in 747 volumes, including 43 incunabula in 40 volumes. After the Second World War, the library suffered great losses when the Red Army requisitioned 590 titles in 709 volumes (including 112 volumes of incunabula) in 1947. All efforts to recover these valuable prints have so far been unsuccessful. Only in connection with the return of such holdings to the German State Library in Berlin (1959) were two incunabula volumes from the Mühlhausen Council Library also returned. The volumes are marked with a slightly modified supralibros, which was initially glued to the front cover and later embossed: LIBER// REIPVB//IMPERIA//LIS//MOL//HVSINAE.
History
