Description
Square bottle with single overlaying made of colorless glass with a three-dimensional representation of a mine inside, slender neck with slightly flared mouth, sealed with a carved wooden cork, which has been fitted with cross wedges on the inside to make it impossible to open. A large number of carved and painted figures and objects on four levels of a wooden scaffold: at the bottom is the mining of ore, above it a band of miners, and at the top, apparently—not clearly visible in the somewhat blurred photograph—the processing of the ore. The knee pads on the miners' white trousers are clearly visible. Based on its structure and overall appearance, this bottle is likely to have originated in Saxony, Lower Silesia, or Kremnitz (now Kremnica). The motif of the band was particularly popular in these regions over a long period of time. The bottle could date back to the late 18th century.
Provenance
Formerly Museum Neuruppin, former Zieten Collection. During the Second World War, parts of the collection were moved to locations including the Neuruppin District Office and have been considered lost since the end of the war.
