Description
Colorless glass goblet with a solid round base rising into a slightly concave, solid stem, faceted lengthwise, transitioning directly into a tall, cup-shaped bowl with a heavy bottom. The front of the bowl is decorated with a shield painted in polychrome enamel. It depicts a sword and scales surrounded by laurel branches; the sword sheath is inscribed with “Yorck,” but the inscription on both sides is illegible in the photograph. The rim is fire finished. This is a commemorative glass dedicated to Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg (1759–1830). A two-part mold was used to shape this glass. Its shape is reminiscent of traditional examples from the Silesian glassworks in Wessola, which, however, usually have a square base and, due to the coal firing introduced there, a grayish glass mass (not visible here). It is not possible to name a manufacturer without reservation.
Provenance
Formerly Museum Neuruppin, former Zieten Collection (number 604d). During the Second World War, parts of the collection were moved to locations including the Neuruppin District Office and have been considered lost since the end of the war.
