Description
Flat glass pane, framed. Simply framed reverse glass painting with polychrome depiction of Saint Nepomuk carrying a crucifix in front of a bridge. Saint Nepomuk, buried in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague and depicted here, was venerated as the patron saint of bridges. The depiction follows a pattern that has been reproduced on reverse glass paintings from the 16th century to the present day.
Provenance
Formerly the Guben City Museum. Parts of the collection were apparently evacuated to Kossar (today: Kosierz) in 1942/43. The part of the collection that remained in Guben is said to have been looted between 1945 and 1948 and has been considered lost ever since.
