Description

The narrative refers to Genesis chapter 45, 1-4, the moment when Joseph is recognised by his brothers. Joseph stands in the centre of the composition in a white robe. According to Egyptian tradition, his head is covered by a turban with an eagle. He presses Benjamin to his chest, while his other brothers kneel around him, kiss the hem of his robe or raise their hands to him in supplication. The encounter takes place in a hall flanked by sinuous, Solomonic columns. In the background, the room opens out onto a landscape with a palm tree. In each of the four corners is a cartouche with a bee, Napoleon's heraldic animal. Signature in the lower right field: ‘Neilson . Ex . 1787’

Provenance
23 November 1809 as a gift from Napoleon I to the Saxon Elector Frederick Augustus the Just (later as King of Saxony: Frederick Augustus I); mentioned in 1920 in the inventory list “Dresden Castle, Palais am Taschenberg, Palais Parkstraße 7”. The 4 large wall tapestries (including Joseph) mentioned there for the Great Dining Hall on the second floor remained in the Dresden Castle and were not given to the House of Wettin; ; in mid-1942 the tapestries (23 pieces in total, including the tapestry named here) were stretched on 8 rolls in the Residenzschloss and transported to the vaulted first floor rooms of the Residenzschloss. In September/October 1942, the rolls were moved to the Green Vault (Fireplace, Jewel and Bronze Rooms); on August 16/17, 1943, the 8 tapestry rolls were transported to Schleinitz Palace, as an inspection on June 8, 1943 led to the conclusion that the rooms in the Green Vault were not sufficiently protected against bombing; A loss in connection with the events of WWII cannot be ruled out (according to the files, loss at the relocation site).
