Knee-length portrait of Christoph Philipp von Nell sitting on a brown armchair in a black coat with a red eagle medal, blue waistcoat, white bandage and collar, reddish-brown face colour, white wig. Grey background, family coat of arms (von Nell) with inscription: Christophorus Philippus Hugo de Nell. Natus 14to Julii 1753, denatus 7mo Decs. 1825. Benefactor Hospitales civilis Trevirsis. Ex. dono Georgii Frederici Jobi de Nell filii defuncti. Ao. 1831.
Probably commissioned by Georg Friedrich Job von Nell around 1830; given on loan to the foundation of the Vereinigte Hospitien, kept there ever since; shown publicly for the first time in 1929 in the ‘Portraits-Ausstellung Trierer vor 100 Jahren’ catalogue number 116, Trier local group of the West German Society for Genealogy in conjunction with the Mosel Museum of the City of Trier 6 to 14 July 1929; 31 March to 28 April 1935 exhibition of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier and the N. S. Cultural Community Trier; catalogue number 47; The exact loss cannot be reconstructed. During the war, parts of the Vereingite Hospitien were heavily damaged by bombs; the painting may have been burnt. It is possible that the painting was removed (although this cannot be determined from the lists of removals) and was lost in this way. A loss of the painting due to the circumstances of the war cannot be ruled out; no further source/mention of the painting. Whereabouts unknown.
