Description
According to ancient Greek tradition, Hippocampus was a sea horse with a fish tail. He embodied the rolling waves of the sea. Here a hippocampus appears as a door knocker. To knock, one lifted the body and dropped the ball he was holding with his front hooves onto a brass knob. Probably from the door of a baroque bourgeois house in Prenzlau.
Provenance
Formerly Uckermark Museum, Prenzlau. Presumably lost during the war in 1945.
