Description
Central painting of the high altar of St Peter's Church in Brunswick. Entombment scene: In the foreground, the bedding of Jesus' body in the tomb (above the tomb), several worshipping people around the central figures, in the background Golgotha and a temple that looks like a church, in front at the lower left edge of the picture two crossed tools on a (stone?) pedestal.
Provenance
Central painting on the second level of the high altar of St. Petri Brunswick; parts of the high altar were removed to Kneitlingen or St. Martin's Church Brunswick during the Second World War (from 1942), it is uncertain whether the painting in question was among them; in 1950, the painting was missing when the high altar was reinstalled, as was another Resurrection painting from the third level of the altar. Circumstance of loss and exact time of loss unknown; assumed period of loss 1945-1950; loss during the war cannot be ruled out.
