Description
A bust portrait of an elderly lady painted in a decidedly modern style, slightly turned to the left, her head slightly turned towards the viewer, whom she seems to be looking at with a gentle smile under dark eyebrows; her left hand placed in the lower, right corner of the picture, obviously holding a bright object; her left shoulder forms an elegantly curved elyptic line. The back of the chair on which she sits accentuated with bright spots. "The painting shows Charlotte Luise Ernestine seated on a chair in the Historicism style. A white bonnet encloses her head, the ends of the bonnet are tied into a large bow under her chin." (Hammerschmidt 2001)
Provenance
Old family property; before 1942 Wolfsburg Castle (until 1932 Gardelegen District, Province of Saxony; then Gifhorn District, Province of Hanover; today Wolfsburg City); then moved to the newly built Neumühle Castle near Tangeln, municipality of Beetzendorf in the Altmark District of Salzwedel, where it is located: "Large living room, main floor"; left behind in 1945 when leaving Neumühle Castle in flight before it was taken over by the Red Army; Neumühle Castle was assigned to the Soviet occupation zone and expropriated; whereabouts unknown
