Description
Cannon model; model of a single-axle gun on a rectangular plate on which a ridge of rough ground is indicated.
In addition to his art collection of around one thousand catalogue numbers, which consisted mainly of contemporary paintings as well as sculptures, Field Marshal Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg also collected small models of cannons. A first piece can be traced back to 1723, and by the time of his death the number of these collectors' items had risen to 43. At least one of them was in the furnishings of Wolfsburg Palace around 1930.
Provenance
Collection of General Field Marshal in Venetian service Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg (* 1661, † 1747); at an unknown time into the Wolfsburg branch of the von der Schulenburg family; before 1942 Wolfsburg Castle (until 1932 Gardelegen County, Province of Saxony; then Gifhorn County, Province of Hanover; today City of Wolfsburg); then moved to the newly built Neumühle Castle near Tangeln, municipality of Beetzendorf in the Altmark district of Salzwedel; left behind in 1945 during the flight from Neumühle Castle before it was taken over by the Red Army; Neumühle Castle was assigned to the Soviet occupation zone and expropriated; whereabouts unknown
