The lords, counts and princes of the House of Reuss of the older line, which ruled until 1918, amassed an important art collection over several centuries. With a few exceptions, it remained the property of the house after 1918 and was finally brought together in Burgk Castle in Thuringia. Burgk Castle and the art collection were owned by Prince and Princess Stolberg-Roßla at the time of the expropriation measures in 1945. Princess Ida was the daughter of the last reigning Prince Heinrich XXII.
