Description
A FINE URBINO PLATE, by Fra. Xanto Avelli, painted in the shallow sunk centre with a man fishing and on the rim with Leda and the Swan, Cupid to the right and in the immediate foreground bursting from their shells Pollux and Castor, and Clytemnestra and Helen, the underside plain except for an inscription in black on the foot, " Di Leda bella il generoso parto, 1538, ,X. ",circa 1538
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
