Description
A RARE CASTEL DURANTE PLATE, by Giovanni Maria, with a rich blue ground, decorated with two kneeling figures of bald-headed cupids flanking a mask and surmounted by another full-length figure of a cupid on a pedestal, this figure is flanked by numerous trofei including drums and cuirasses in yellow, orange, pale blue and pale green, the underside with roughly executed foliate scrolls and a blue border round the rim, circa 1515
Provenance
Munich, loss 1938;
The collection (approx. 440 works) was confiscated by the SS in Munich in 1938 on the occasion of the ‘Reichskristallnacht’ and auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1939 (7/8 June and 19/20 July).
