The painting was commissioned by the Bavarian government in 1927/1928 and hung in the so-called Montgelas Hall of the then Bavarian Foreign Ministry on Promenadeplatz in Munich on 7 July 1928. According to witnesses, it was taken down at the beginning of the Third Reich and moved to the Residenz. At the end of the war, it is said to have been evacuated with other works by Peter Hirsch (some of which were returned) to a salt mine in Bavaria. Lost at the relocation site
